Activity

The BABYLON Association is an association of voluntary members engaged in nature conservation, social activities, preparation and implementation of sports and cultural events, beautification activities, and events for children, mainly in the village of Babylon.

It follows on from the work of the Beautification Association, which was founded in Babylon in 1914 at the instigation of the local school administrator, Mr. Fr. Jílek, and had the task of beautifying the surroundings of Babylon and making the stay of summer guests more pleasant. We do not know until when exactly the association operated, but in 2002 another successor was founded, the Babylon Civic Association, which became famous for its cycling races - Babylonska šlapka and Babylonský lét. Later, due to a change in legislation, the association was renamed BABYLON, zs and it still operates in this form today.

The organization's activities are financially supported by the municipality of Babylon and the Pilsen Region, to whom we would like to thank.

We would be happy to welcome new members to our ranks who decide to develop Babylon in some way and lend a hand;-)

We organized a theater in our village in 2024. Two generations came together to weave baskets from pedig at the Babylon Community Center.

This year we have again dedicated ourselves to cleaning the dam of Babylon Pond, which is already nice after 3 years (it is a dam by the road towards Pasečnica, under the oak alley) and provides us and our visitors with beautiful views of the pond. The village of Babylon will have Mr. Ing. Krejčí prepare the project documentation for further modifications to this dam. Last year, the village built several rest benches on the site. The new project should make even lower positions of this dam accessible.

In 2023, we applied for administrative proceedings regarding the granting of an exemption from the protection of plants and animals for the Babylon Bypass construction. We do not agree with the opinion of the Children of the Earth association, unlike them, based on studies and real knowledge of both the surrounding nature and the situation in the village and on the roads (we ourselves have witnessed serious traffic accidents several times, and our children cross from the bus stop here without crossing in columns of cars coming from Germany), we are convinced that the construction is truly beneficial to the public and drawing attention to moose, wolves or lynx , whose occurrence has not been recorded here in the last 5 years, seems to us misleading and purposefully delaying the construction, which people have been waiting for since the time when the border with Germany was opened for motor vehicles.

Statement on the Children of the Earth's appeal for the construction of the Babylon Bypass

As part of our nature conservation activities, we have cleaned up the air raids on the dam of Babylon Pond  for the third year in a row , planted trees and cleaned up waste from the surrounding forests. We continue to monitor the water quality of the springs around Babylon, the results can be found here . We monitored and marked the occurrence of the Orchidaceae family in the field , we warned the technical services to avoid premature cutting. Among the endangered species, we also recorded the Lesser Pear . We participated in an excursion that led to the Natural Monument: Meadow at Šanjberského Pond, where about 200 individuals of the May Ringlet , also belonging to the Red List of the Czech Republic, were blooming. We also regularly monitor its occurrence directly in Babylon.

In May 2022, we commissioned a botanical survey of significant locations around the railway line, which points to the occurrence of endangered plants. The entire research and  photo documentation  can be read here  .
